A kitten or a baby sister.
Every year on my birthday, as I blew out the candles on my cake, I wished for a kitten or a baby sister. I wasn’t really particular about which one. Didn’t happen. No kitten. No sweet little snuggly kitten to love and hold. No gray and white adorable little kitten to call my very own.
No baby sister either. Instead I got three brothers.
Uncle Phil is here!! Grab the camera and start shooting. How’d my ‘baby’ brother get to be so tall??
God does, however, delight in reaching out and fulfilling our hopes and desires, often in ways different from what we expect. And also in His timing. Next week my baby brother is getting married and giving me a sister. The Lord has blessed me with wonderful sisters-in-law. My husband has one sister. His brother is married to a fantastic woman. My middle brother has an amazing wife. It turns out having brothers can still yield sisters!
This evening I was finally able to meet my newest sister-in-law to be. The kids have been so excited! They love all their aunts (and great aunts!) and were quite upset with Uncle Phil for planning to marry someone they had NEVER met. Really, the nerve.
Don’t they look young to have five children? Such a nice family.
Phil and Almost Aunt Emily joined us for a delicious dinner, dessert, some Stone Soup (the game not part of the meal) and several rounds of Five Crowns. Daniel sat close to Uncle Phil for most of the game time, playing a mean game of bluff in Stone Soup. It was one of those sweet sibling gatherings that are much too rare when family is spread out around the US.
Phil, we love Emily and are so glad to welcome her into the family. Thank you for making sure I get another sister.
Kathy
How delightful to meet you, “Almost-Aunt” Emily, if only through the blog. Hopefully you won’t change your mind at the last minute, now that you are meeting more of the extended family. Interesting to think that you won’t have the opportunity to meet me until the day of the wedding, perhaps. Coincidence? Or possibly crafty planning on Phil’s part, not wanting to scare off his bride … ?
It was a quiet day, here at the home front. You are missed, little family, even if you are hard on appliances, or so I hear. You can still come home, all is forgiven!
Darling blog, dear Katherine. Sweet pictures! I had to call in Uncle Jerry to look. I’m so glad you got to meet Emily at last. She is very interesting and smart and dear, I think. Of course it’s hard to beat that Jenn- who is simply wonderful.
But, hey, it’s not a competition. Yea, Emily!!
Love you each. Aunt Kate
Thank goodness our brothers got married, Kathy! I never got my wish for a sister either. One year I did get Betsy – the life sized doll…..But now Mark and Tim have given me sisters – hooray! I only wish that we all lived closer to each other. Until then I guess I remain the East Coast sister…
What a fun time and what a sweet looking couple! I can’t get over how Phil has changed since your wedding! I guess that was a while back, eh? Such a tall guy and such a lovely fiancee! You have such a special family, Kathy.
And….I completely relate to your “sister happiness;” growing up I never had sisters but as an adult I have been blessed with wonderful sisters-in-law and now get to know the joy of having those special girl friendships.
Do you know, my little girl, Sarah ,regularly asks God for a sister OR a kitten. [David says,"Well, looks like she's gettin' a kitten." smiling]

Love, Anne
How neat that your brother is getting married. Both my sisters and my brother are now married and I LOVE my two brother in laws and my sister in law so much!
Posie – you are a great sister!!! My Nana always referred to her daughter in law as her daughter. I was always moved by that. She really loved her like a daughter. No in-law talk for her.
It would be so much fun if we all lived near by. I don’t think you are going to end up in Washington any time soon.
VERY KEWL! My brother isn’t married so no sil on that side. And, we aren’t close to dh’s sister….. How FUN that you have SISTERS via marriage!
Your captions are often so funny!
My dd never did get a much wanted baby sister either, Hmm maybe that is why we let her get a kitten (who we got soon after her 3rd brother was born).
