The party isn’t over yet

My theory is: as long as there is another present to be opened, then it’s still your birthday. My brother Thom’s birthday is on the 31st of July, so growing up there was a very definite end to my birthday celebrations. He did his best to arrive on the scene at the very end of July, but still, he was constantly encroaching on my birthday. These days, with Thom safely miles away, I am free to claim the entire month of July for my birthday.

Of course, I share one or two days with Sarah.

After all, I’m not greedy.

Timothy, Elizabeth and Mark are obviously also very excited about my birthday.

In all fairness, Sarah was the one who had a whole basket full of presents left to open. The week of camp was busy and wet, wet, wet. Did I already mention how it rained and rained every day but one? I don’t want to complain, but the middle of July is NOT the time it should be raining. Even in western Washington. Aren’t there rules about this sort of thing? Something about rain and birthdays and standards of summer weather? Somehow there wasn’t ever time to open the rest of the birthday presents. No doubt it was because of the rain.

Today we all gathered for one last party celebration. Yes, it was raining. Sarah and I did our best to ignore the lousy weather and concentrate on more important things, like presents and being spoiled rotten.

look at that birthday girl

On Tuesday, the day after her birthday, Sarah told me, “I miss being four.”

When we got home this evening, there was a huge box on the porch addressed to me. More presents? See how a birthday can be stretched out to last and last.

And there are still cards to open on the mantle.

Life is good.

Now if it would just stop raining.

  1. Rain rain, go away!! Come again some other day!!

Sorry for all the camp/birthday rain, dear Katherine. Looks like you managed to have presents and parties and some b.day cheer.

Are you heading back to town soon? I love you and yours!!

  2. Yippee, I didn’t realize your blog was back up!

Happy Birthday to Kathy and Sarah! TOO cute about Sarah missing being four! I love stretching out birthdays too.

My mil (from Port Orchard) is currently in Oklahoma. Last I heard, she was shopping for books on ark building, lol.

  3. Kristine – I hope your mil gets that ark up and running. I can’t believe how much it has rained this month. It is NOT allowed to rain in the summer here in WA. We pay our dues the rest of the year.

Tim read the weather is supposed to be break on Tuesday and we’re back to sunshine and warm temps. Whew. :)

  4. Jennifer – thanks for the birthday greetings! It’s nice to be home from camp and back in our ‘city house.’ Half of my children are ready to move out to the country, a portion is oblivious and the rest want to stay here in the suburbs. Interesting. Ha!

  5. Happy birthday, Kath! And Sarah! I think it would be special to share a birthday with one of your children, give you a real excuse for celebrating it all out. :) I am definitely planning on going to Homecoming, although I’m not sure what portion of my family will be coming. I think it might be nice to have everyone along and do the Wmsburg thing. But that might be exhausting for Dave when I just want to catch up with everyone. I’m glad I’ll get to see you there!

  6. Isn’t fun to have those birthdays stretched out! I love getting things well past the special day.

  7. Kathy – I hope you had a fun birthday month. I celebrated my birthday at camp yesterday. Nothing says happy birthday like having 150 your closest friends singing happy birthday to you in the dining hall at dinner. Anyway, the weather here at camp has been beautiful.

  8. You could sure send some of that rain our direction. We could really use some of it!

I can’t imagine stretching out a birthday for an entire month, of course, my birthday is in December and something about Christmas coming a week after my birthday pretty much leaves me no chance of celebrating for a month!

  9. Happy Belated Birthday! Kathy, I am so behind in blogs that I didn’t realize it was your birthday! It sounds like you both had a great time celebrating your birthday’s. Love the comment about missing being 4 . . .how precious!
