P365 – Day 41 (Saturday Silliness)

Tim got up this morning before I did. He encountered some silly looking creatures milling about the living room.

cool dudes

I missed the entire thing. I’m so glad Tim captured these “wild animals” on film. The sunglasses really make the outfit – not sure who came up with that little accessory idea.

I was cold this afternoon and spent part of the day wearing the hood to my sweatshirt. The kids love to borrow my camera (like mother/like son or something like that). David took a picture of me while Daniel snuck behind, planning to go out and watch a Clifford movie.

Daniel, Rachel and I spent close to an hour and a half at the church library, sorting and alphabetizing books. Lots and lots of books. The library moved from its old spot to make way for a renovated nursery. There were only a few women there sorting books so I was very glad that we went by to help. Rachel was especially helpful. Daniel spent most of his time building elaborate mazes out of the empty boxes. Lol!

After supper Rachel and I went to the produce store to buy things for a fruit tray. There is a benefit concert for the Refuge tomorrow afternoon. We’re providing a big fruit tray as well as adorable grandchildren to hand out bulletins, welcome people, etc. Tim will take pictures.

While Rachel and I were at the store the younger kids played a rousing game of Pay Day. Joshua is still off at the Middle School Church Retreat. I believe David was the Pay Day winner. Way to go, Little Buddy. Rachel and I got home in time for Rachel to take some pictures of their game.

We have a busy day tomorrow but the house is fairly picked up so I’m ahead of the game in that regard. Daniel worked on the garage today while Rachel cleaned two bathrooms. David and Sarah made sure their bedrooms were all cleaned up. I washed laundry but still need to tidy up my bedroom. It’s awfully nice to have some extra hands around to help.

P365 – Day 40 (School Spot)

Whoops–It looks like I have two Day 38′s. Well, these things happen. I’ll just jump ahead to Day 40 and fix the other post.

Somehow I went through the entire day without taking a single picture (gasp!). I even had my camera with me and still forgot – too busy teaching, I guess.

I was exhausted this afternoon/evening. I came home from co-op, read my e-mail and then climbed into bed with my Bible, journal and a magazine. Tim’s home office is upstairs in our room so I was able to talk with him about my day, spend some time praying with him (been TOO long since we’ve had our couple prayer time), and then just relax reading. Rachel came and read her book next to me. Very cozy.

I stayed in bed until dinner time – had Daniel and Rachel fix frozen pizzas. It was wonderful. We watched part of Calamity Jane over dinner.

How is it possible that I have somehow missed this little treasure? It was hilarious – songs and dancing and Indians – a perfect mix not to mention Doris Day and our favorite, Howard Keel (Adam Pontipee from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers). I definitely want to add this to our collection of musicals.

Tim went back upstairs to work after dinner and, at some point, I got a sudden burst of energy. I decided to rearrange the dining room and vacuum the downstairs. I turned the music up loud and got to work. We have Bible study at our house this weekend so I was motivated to do some cleaning. Somehow my energy lasted through all the furniture moving and vacuuming. I’m beat now and ready for bed. Not sure who is going to clean the kitchen. Tim is still upstairs working, bless his heart. Joshua is off at the middle school retreat. He’s the dinner dishes person this week so I guess I might have to tackle the kitchen myself.

My Project 365 picture(s) of the day comes from the living room. Our favorite school couch time/reading spot and the very full bookshelves next to it. Rather boring with no children in sight but at least the floor is vacuumed. Lol!

P365 – Day 38 (One more swim)

We got up early (for some very vague definitions of “early”) and went over for one last swim at the hotel. I’m always amazed at how eager the children are to get into the pool. The girls spent the night so they were up early and had already been in the pool for an hour by the time we arrived. We joined them for some breakfast and then got right into our suits.

Mom and Dad left for the airport around 10 am. We went home and tried to get in a full day of school. Sarah asked if we could go to the hotel tomorrow. She didn’t understand why we couldn’t have breakfast there again. Finally Joshua helped me explain things by telling her we didn’t have the key to the pool or bedroom anymore. She understood that Mamie and Grandad were gone but didn’t see why that should stop her from swimming at the hotel. Lol!

A blurry shot but I had to include it as it shows Sarah JUMPING fearlessly into the pool.

Tomorrow we have our homeschooling co-op. I have a busy schedule as I’m “on” for all three of my classes (unlike last week when I left early to go to the Beth Moore conference). I have everything (almost) prepared. I’m too tired to concentrate on it any more this evening. I’ll finish the rest in the morning.

Look how tall Joshua is getting!

One last hug goodbye!

It’s been a mild week, temperature wise. The children played outside today – they have some new elaborate robot game going. I stay out of it so long as no one is being hurt and the neighbor’s homes all seem to be intact. Mom called to say they were home safely. Thank You, Lord, for holding them in Your most capable hands. It was 15 degrees in Michigan. Ouch, that’s cold!

All for now!

P365 – Day 38 (Last Full Day)

I have all sorts of pictures from the day. Thank goodness I haven’t felt constrained or limited by the whole “Take One Picture” aspect of the Project 365. Lol! This certainly is going to be a well documented year if I keep this up. I have always used my e-mails as a point of reference when I need to look up an event or special family occasion – now I have this blog as a tool as well (complete with pictures).

This was our last full day with my parents. All three of the boys spent the night at the hotel so they swam away the morning while we slept in. Sarah didn’t get up until after 9:30 am. She was a tired little camper.

Dad was very gracious and worked on several home projects for me. He took down our screen door and fixed it – repaired the screen (which broke the FIRST day we put it up), added a grill on the inside so the screen will last at least a week this time, shaved the side a bit so the door would fit properly, and added a pneumatic closer so the door won’t slam shut (although most of the family has become very trained at catching the door before it slams).

grandad and the door

Sarah happened to walk by when I had the camera so she made it into the pictures. She didn’t really “help” but she poses so nicely it looks like she was a helper. We won’t tell if you don’t.

Mom did laundry while we worked on her Costa Rica blog. She washed loads and loads of dirty clothes and even went through the entire sock basket, trying to match up socks. Thank you, Mom!!

David is crazy about these new goggles. I had to get a picture of him wearing them around the house. Too funny.

As soon as he arrived home from the morning’s swim, David came and told me he had some thoughts about the day. “Since this is our last day with Mamie and Grandad, I’ve been thinking we should do something special,” he said. “I thought we should probably go to McDonald’s Playland for lunch. What do you think, Mommy?” How could I resist? A “fun outing” at McDonald’s – do we live right or what? Lol!!

Playland kiddos

Of course, if ice cream is involved, that does make it pretty special.

Joshua is too old to play on the equipment so he brought along a book. He manages to enjoy his ice cream cone while reading – a multitasker if ever I saw one!

Back at home, full of hamburgers and ice cream, Grandad went to work putting the molding up around our large white board. Thanks, Erica, for this great idea! We love the whiteboard and use it all the time. It’s nice because the size fits all – everyone can reach a spot upon which to write.

The rest of us played Apples to Apples (Bible version) while Grandad worked.

game time

We canceled our Wednesday night outings in favor of family time. We went out for a yummy meal at Applebee’s and then came home to play Citadels. I think everyone thoroughly enjoyed their dinner choices. Some even had a repeat of their lunch menu – hamburgers and fries.

We had a little wait for a table but eventually got a nice spot, big enough for the 9 of us.

Back at home, David and Sarah played on the floor (an elaborate game involving Playmobil people, a Imaginext jeep, and several warriors) while we played Citadels. Rachel decided not to play the game. She did some e-mailing and then came to consult Mamie on her game choices. Citadels is lots of fun. I like it – it still takes us a little while (as we’re figuring things out) but isn’t a very complicated game. There is strategy and competition but it’s also a building game. Fun.

Thank you for the wonderful visit, Mom and Dad! Come back any time. Fly safely! We love you.

Costa Rica Part 2

More thoughts on Costa Rica from Cindy:

One day we rode a canopy over the rain forest and saw gorgeous vegetation from above.

Canopy ride

We were intrigued by all the secondary plants that are able to grow on the primary tree; each one seeking the sun while at the same time firing long, arrow-like roots to the distant ground.

Another time our bus stopped to observe a native banana-harvesting operation, as they readied the bananas for export. It was fascinating to see how each bunch was conveyed to the plant where they were washed, sorted and boxed for shipping.

We drove to the Pacific coast (across the continental divide). Bill was tickled to be able to jog along the beach on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts in the same week.

We stayed at Jaco Beach and spent the morning at the shore, surrounded by monkeys and beautiful birds.

On the way to the beach, we took a hike that included crossing a suspended bridge. It wasn’t as scary as some of us feared. It was 30 or so feet off the ground.

One of the highlights of our trip was eating meals and playing cards each evening with Bill’s brothers and their wives.

Along the trip we enjoyed the many beautiful plants and flowers.

All of the hotels had pools – some days we were too busy to enjoy swimming but when we had a free moment we went down to the water.

The highlight for shopping was in the town of Sarchi, home of the famous Costa Rican ox carts. Painting ox carts is their specialty and we saw many beautiful examples of their work.

You can buy one of their painted ox carts and have them disassembled and shipped home. Kate – wouldn’t one of these look beautiful in your Fort Clark sunroom!

Finally it was time to go home. We flew on the same plane with Steve and Debby to Charlotte, NC.

This was an amazing sunset that Bill captured with his camera.

When we left Costa Rica, the temperature was 85 degrees and the sun was shining brightly. When we arrived in Michigan it was 10 degrees. We left the next day for Seattle where it was 50 degrees with nary a sunbeam in sight. Isn’t this an amazing world God has created.
