Books, Grandad and Loss

I’m sitting in the darkened room of my mom’s new condo. Her lovely, airy, just-the-right-size condo where she lives ALONE, without my dad. How is it possible that a year has passed already since we said goodbye to one of the most godly, energetic, full-of-life men that I have ever known? A year? A year of tears, sadness, changes, laughter, new memories, birthdays, holidays, old and new traditions. At every turn there exists both bitter loss and, at the same time, the peace and comfort that can only be found in God’s incredible care.

“I haven’t been bored since the third grade,” Dad used to say, a book (or two) in hand, a project (or two) in the works, and a place (or two) to go.

I found this picture in a stack of old family slides.

“What happened in the third grade?” I asked my mom this week, my heart full of an odd mingled joy and sadness, glad to be together with my family in Michigan but hating the reason for our celebration.

Mom’s eyes slid to the bookshelves adorning the wall in the upstairs bedroom, and she laughed, “It’s probably when he discovered the school library.”

Oh my, that must be it! I can think of dozens of pictures, snapshots on the computer and faded slides in boxes, and hundreds of images, vivid memories, that include my father with a book in his hand.

My high school honors program, yep a book and magazine article tucked in his jacket pocket.

Visiting people at the hospital – Bible in one hand and a book in the other.

The pool, beach or park – there wasn’t a single outing where Dad would venture without one or more books, usually a small tote bag full of reading material with him.

Niece Aydia already shares Grandad's love of reading!

My dad possessed a passion for learning and a library of thousands of books. He could never resist a book sale and was constantly bringing home bags of “treasures” he found at the library sale racks. I truly believe he intended to read ALL of the books on his shelves, if only he could find the time in his incredibly busy, full life.

I remember the distressed sound in his voice when we spoke over the phone while he was in the hospital, “Kath, I can’t seem to concentrate on my book. I can’t even read one of the westerns.”

Are there books in heaven?

A year since we last held his hand, kissed his cheek and said farewell.

Dear Daddy,

I miss you. Your smile reached down to the deep, scared places of my heart. That smile radiated, loud and clearly, “You are my daughter, and I love you.”

Thank you for instilling in me a curiosity and craving for knowledge. Thank you for teaching and learning and modeling a hunger and thirst for the Lord. Thank you for loving my children. My soul hurts for their loss as much as my own.

Sometimes it feels like we can’t go on without you. I can’t remember a time when you and Mom were apart for more than three days. There is an emptiness, by her side, where you should be standing.

I dreamt last month that we were all together. In the dream I kept wondering, “Where were you during that long year when Mom sold the house and moved? Why weren’t you with her? Where did you go?” But the separation was over and you smiled, and I knew I was loved.

I woke up and realized you were gone, and I sobbed and sobbed.

In the quiet moments, later in the day, I realized that dream was a gift; it was a little glimpse of heaven. Eventually we will all be together again. We will no longer ache with loss and sadness. We will be whole and complete, and we will all smile in the radiance of Christ’s glory and presence.

I love you,
Kathy

Happy Birthday David – 11 years old!

A momentous day indeed. David, who just yesterday was a mere child of 10, turned 11 years old today. Practically a young man. Gulp.

And what would a family blog be without some pictures of this special day.

David and I saw this idea for rainbow pancakes on Pinterest

We have a tradition of decorating the house (on the eve of the birthday) from top to bottom for the birthday child. I’ve done all sorts of different decorating themes from streamers and balloons to ribbons and birthday signs. The Dollar Store has a wonderful collection of simple (affordable) birthday banners and signs. I hang them and then carefully pack and store them from year to year. I love to shop for gifts which is why I always prefer going on the Gift Geek website as they have the best gifts ideas at reasonable prices for almost every occasion, thus make it quite easy for me and also giving me time to concentrate on other things to make the birthday the best.

It’s funny how often birthdays come up when there are five children.

Be careful of the traditions you start, I now say. Ha!

Table all set for the b-day boy

And yes, I do my most creative work after midnight, so pre-birthday nights are often late ones for me. It’s worth it, I think, to see and hear the kids’ excited voices in the morning (after I’ve had my coffee and the fog has lifted). Many times the older children join me in decorating (when I’m willing to start a little earlier in the evening). Last year I was in the midwest, sitting by my father’s hospital bed, over David’s birthday. It was a devastating time on many levels, and David was heartbroken that I was gone for his special day. Amidst all the sadness, it was a joy to hear that Tim and the children all pitched in to do Mom’s Decorating Work and created a beautiful birthday morning for David.

The birthday boy in pictures!

I always try to do something a little special in my decorating (there’s only so many times you can hang streamers without it getting a trifle blasé). This year I decided to go through my picture file folders and create some collages of David’s birthdays over the past 10 years. It was difficult to weed through the pictures and not print pages and pages of photo memories, but I managed to condense the birthday celebrations to 6 pages. I printed them on card stock and spread them all around the birthday table. We’ll laminate them and save them in David’s memory bin. We also prepared funny coffee mugs for every member of the family.

Poor David had to wait ALL day to really celebrate his birthday. Tim was working in Seattle and wasn’t home until late. We have a strict rule (although it might be unwritten) that you can’t open presents until all the family is assembled. David took the day off from school and enjoyed computer games, a movie, and just generally not having to do “work,” but No Presents.

Sarah worked on David’s birthday dessert, an elaborate creation of yellow cake, Oreos, chocolate pudding, Cool Whip and chocolate sauce. Oh, and we threw in a few M&M’s to round things out.

David requested a cake/pudding trifle for his birthday this year.

Of course, no dessert until Daddy got home either. My goodness, a day to build character. It’s a good thing David turned 11 and is now full of wisdom and patience.

How delicious!! Yum.

Finally Tim returned home and we could open presents, eat trifle and end the day with Joshua’s reading of a chapter in The Hobbit.

And what would a birthday be without some weapons?

Some Birthday Quotes:

“You did it, Mom, you made the colored pancakes that we saw on Pinterest.” Gotta love a 11 year old who already knows about Pinterest. “Thank you, they are delicious. and yes, I’ll take chocolate milk with them.

“I have to tell you, I just really LOVE getting all the attention on my birthday.” Said matter-of-factly, cheerfully and with a deep of sigh of contentment as siblings were doing his chores, getting him little treats, and just generally making him Star for the Day. Such an honest reflection – don’t we all like to be special at least once a year.

“YES!! I was really hoping for some real weapons on my birthday.” This was as David opened his double morning star that Tim bought. Yikes. What is it about boys and weapons?

“It’s hard to believe I’m actually 11. Joshua, does it just take a while until you start to feel like you’re really 11?” To which Joshua replied,
“Yep, just give it time. It’s only been one day.”

New t-shirt from Mom and necklace from Rachel - David loves gifts!

David, we love you very much! We are so proud of you and the young man you are becoming. Your kindness, thoughtfulness and obedient spirit is an shining example to all of us. You have a great sense of humor and a silliness that makes me laugh, but also a love for the Lord and earnestness that refreshes and renews my heart. You are playful and kind with your younger sister, rowdy and fun with your older sister, a good companion and buddy to your middle brother, and an eager and appreciative student of your oldest brother.

What a gift you are to our family!

Happy Birthday!

Movie Night Out

In a crazy break from our usual Sunday Family Day, Rachel and I gathered a bunch of friends (mostly mothers and daughters) and set off for the movies. David and Sarah spent the time with some of their besties (is that a dictionary approved word yet?) while Tim, Daniel and Joshua stayed home.

David and Sarah ADORE Eli and Emma - such good friends!

The boys enjoyed an old western with the gravely voiced legend, Clint Eastwood, while the girls stuck to a basic romantic comedy (aka chick flick). Thanks to our ClearPlay dvd, the language in the western was filtered. I wish I could say the same for our theater viewing. Hmmmm.

A rowdy crowd indeed, and at least four of them had already left before I pulled out my camera.

It’s actually quite difficult to find an open Starbucks on Sunday evening, but Barnes and Noble fit the bill perfectly. We talked and laughed and left just ahead of them asking us to quiet down.

We’ll definitely need to plan another movie outing again soon. The only problem, in my opinion, is finding a movie of both high quality production/acting/character development and acceptable moral content. So hard to enjoy cinematic entertainment without lowering your standards. Hmmmmm.

We might just have to stick with the classics….

Morning Manna

Once a quarter the women’s ministry at our church hosts Morning Manna – a Saturday brunch where the women have the opportunity to gather, meet new people, hear from one of the ladies within the church body, and enjoy some time of delicious food, fellowship and laughter.

For some reason Sarah decided she wanted to go with me to this morning’s brunch. “That’s a great idea,” I enthused, “why don’t we call Caden and see if she and Mrs. B. would like to join us.” I think there is something appealing (even intriguing) to a young girl about the congregation of women.

And so we see the next generation of godly women...

Sarah and Caden were perfect additions to the morning – they joined in on the Compliment Your Neighbor table mixer, they cheerfully ate the breakfast, and they sat quietly during the talk.

Krystal & Caden - more mother and daughter Morning Manna girls.

What a joy to spend some special time with Sarah. Just this week I had shared with a friend some struggles I was having with Sarah and expressed my desire to carve out some one-on-one opportunities with her. How kind of God to, so quickly, provide the perfect outing. Rachel and I have developed a sweet rhythm of shopping and running errands together, but Sarah is usually content to stay home and play or brings her beloved buddy/brother, David, with her and therefore we don’t have a consistent pattern of mother-daughter time.

Matching Purple Girls

Our speaker, Drea (Rurban Family Blog) did a beautiful job of sharing the story of her courtship (this was a Valentine’s Day themed brunch, afterall) and outlined her upcoming role as missionary/pastor’s wife. She and her husband Carl are leaving at the end of this month, with their four children, to work with Village Missions. We love this dedicated, faithful family and will miss them dearly!

Esther - two days old and already involved in Women's Ministry!

Of course, what would a women’s ministry event be without some sort of silliness? I don’t know how I keep getting talked into skits (big and small), but they are a lot of fun. Thankfully I can always find a willing victim, I mean friend, to join me on stage. This time Michelle and I ad-libbed our way through some announcements.

The Girl With All the Problems & the Girl With All the Answers

I am incredibly blessed to have such wonderful friends in my life.

Michelle can always be counted on - for friendship, support and fun!

I hope I am modeling to my daughters how to find and be a good friend. I am definitely a work in progress, and God is constantly shaping and growing me.

Marion and Nancy have greatly enriched my life.

Sarah had such a delightful time, that she asked if she can please go to the next Morning Manna in May. I’m sure laughing along with her mother’s silly skit (or was that laughing AT her mother?) added to the fun of the morning. I loved having her by my side: sharing with her the joy of women gathering together in the House of the Lord, training in manners and etiquette, modeling being involved and serving at church, and just plain growing closer as mother and daughter.

Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Proverbs 31:30

Sunshine or Rain

The sun has been shining down upon us for days and days now. My younger children are sure it’s summer (“Can we wear shorts and flip flops?”) and my older boys are smug that, even in the winter months, they never packed away their shorts.

The sun is shining - let's play outside!

But despite the lovely weather, the outings at the beach and trips to the park, I’ve seen the forecast. And I’m very familiar with winters in Washington state…

Oh dear, that looks wet...

Today, as I met with a friend and spent some time in prayer, I lifted up a sincere request that I would be content with both the sunshine and the rain. I know my heart; I long for the warmth of sunny days the blessings, the ease of life and not the work.

David and Sarah are ready to leap off the porch

I want to live a life that shines with the love of Jesus – whether the view from my window is clear with blue skies or grey with a blanket of clouds.

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
