Chandler Speaks

This afternoon we had the privilege of watching “Baby Chandler” who, at a year and a half is hardly a “baby” any more. You won’t be able to convince my children of that fact, however. They just love Baby Chandler. “Baby Chandler is so cute.” “Did you see what Baby Chandler did?” “Look, he’s waving.” “Oh now he’s laughing.” And on and on. According to the kids he’s the cutest baby ever (and obviously an abolute genius). Of course, to Sarah (who will turn 5 in July) he IS a baby. Thankfully (toddler or baby) Chandler is too young to be offended by the baby title.

Rachel and Daniel watch Chandler one day a week while Julee and I work out. It’s a great opportunity for them to practice their babysitting skills (on someone other than their brother and sister) and earn a bit of cash. Julee is kind and pays them for something they would probably be willing to do for free (or pay her to do, shush, don’t tell).

Today we had Chandler at our house (a rare treat). We took a few pictures and thought they deserved posting along with some of his possible thoughts.

I may be cute but I am NOT a baby. Look how fast I can make this spoon go. Faster than a speeding bullet. I’m more like a Super Toddler!

These people are so silly. They get fruit and veggies and sandwiches and what do they give me??? An airplane. And why are they all smiling like that? Do they think I’m going to be satisfied with this airplane? They had better watch out. Haven’t they seen what I can do with a spoon?

lunch with the kids

Help! Get me out of here! Run away. Save yourself!!!

ball with daniel

Wow, cool ball! I guess I can stay a little longer.

Chandler was a perfect visitor today. He entertained the children for hours. I even got some good vacuuming out of Daniel before Chandler arrived.

“Daniel, we need to make sure there’s nothing on the floor that could go into Chandler’s mouth.”
“You’re right, Mom! I’ll vacuum right away!”

Hey, maybe Chandler could come back on a regular basis so I could keep up with the vacuuming. Or at least get Daniel to keep up with the vacuuming. Chandler fell asleep about 5 minutes before his parents arrived to retrieve him (typical). When he awoke a little while later, Daniel carried him all the way home with Joshua and David in tow. I’m not sure if that means they were eager to get rid of him or wanted to be with him until the very last minute. Sweet kids. Oh, and Chandler’s not bad either. :)

Come back any time, Little Buddy!

YMCA Triathlon for Kids

This year the homeschooling PE coordinators at the Y decided to do something different. Every spring the program ends with a picnic lunch. The two groups (Mon/Wed and Tues/Thurs) come together for a big potluck meal and games. Today, as one of the final class sessions, the children participated in a triathlon (or biathlon for the little ones whose feet couldn’t reach the bike pedals or big ones who didn’t bring their bathing suits).

ready to go

Got their numbers and ready to go!

Rachel didn’t do the swimming portion (conveniently forgot her bathing suit) but the boys all did. They proved to be great swimmers! I was so pleased to watch them swim confidentally. David was excited about the whole thing and out swam everyone in his group. Good job, Buddy!

Daniel’s been in swimming this year at PE and has found it rather stretching. They do a LOT of laps each class period. I remember how afraid he used to be of the water. Now, look at him swim.

While all of this excitement was going on, Sarah had her usual swimming and gymnastics classes (separate – wouldn’t want you to think she was combining those two).

The rest of the day was filled with school (big kids), a nap (mom), dinner (everyone), Special Day (Rachel and Tim), a movie (kids), and some garage cleaning (mom while kids watch movie).

Traveling Jungle Gym

Sometimes you don’t have time to rent or borrow a truck. You can’t be bothered with a little thing like transportation details. In that situation, the best thing to do is gather a crew of locals and haul the goods by hand. I came home from the Y this morning to find a team on the lawn, mobilized and ready to go.

Okay guys, we need to get this to baby Chandler. Let’s line up and grab a side.

jungle climber

David and Sarah, I don’t want you slacking on the job. Everybody works in this family, now lift!!

lifting up

Mom, you coming? You’re getting left behind. Surely you can keep up with us, can’t you? That camera isn’t too heavy, is it?

walk away

Many hands make a light load. Good job, guys!

lifting together

Joshua leads the way while David carries his side with one finger. What a team!

And here he is, waiting patiently for the kids to get his new toy put into place. Enjoy the Jungle Climber, Chandler!

Sarah’s First Haircut

It was time. Time to get Rapunzel and do some work on those split ends.
long hair

Man, that is some LONG hair! Somebody, run and grab the scissors. Don’t, of course, grab the scissors and run. Everybody knows you don’t run with scissors. That would be plain dangerous. Safety first, people!

long hair again

One more look at the luxurious locks of my little lady. There is such grace and poise in her bearing.

As soon as I whipped out my scissors (with great care, of course, I read the notice on the package that says “Warning: scissors may be sharp!”) Sarah turned into Rapunzel Contortionist Girl and tried to watch me cut her hair. Now, with the boys this is a difficult feat, but with hair as long as Sarah’s it wasn’t impossible. It did, however, prevent me from getting a nice straight cut (and I’m only that good of a stylist in the first place). Thankfully, Rachel stepped in to help. Rachel, a sweet Princess of Long Locks herself, grabbed the dry erase markers and began to draw on the white board. This was the perfect distraction.

Sarah managed to hold still during her hair cut.

She’s all done! What a beauty!

sarah's new look

I wouldn’t go so far as to say she now has short hair, but I did cut off quite a bit. Let’s do the comparison thing.

We Have a Winner!

A big Thank You to everyone who took the time to leave a comment on the Favorite Blog Tim posted last week. It was fun reading what other people have enjoyed on the blog. I am having a hard time myself picking out some favorites. I think it’s because I would rather write new and future ‘favorite blogs’ rather than go back and re-read old ones. Plus Tim already picked most of the good ones. :)

On Monday morning Sarah (age 4 1/2) randomly selected a winner among the commenters. We had her pick a number (since the comments are numbered this seemed simplest). She did not know the names of any of the people involved in the contest. She did not know the significance of what she was doing. She was not bribed or cajoled in any way.

She was, however, extremely influenced by one thing, her own age. Not surprisingly, therefore, she picked the Number Four!!! That means, De’Etta (the wonderful mother of 9, wife to an Air Force chaplain, and a fellow blogger) is our winner!!

Congratulations, De’Etta! If you already have Third Day (Wherever You Are) cd, let me know and I’ll pass it along to some other blessed soul. :)
