Where Do You Live? Seattle?

The waterfront welcomes us to downtown Seattle!

The waterfront welcomes us to downtown Seattle!

This is a pretty typical exchange that happens when I travel out of state:

Stranger: Where are you from?
Me: Washington.
Stranger: Nice, I love D.C. So much history!
Me: No, Washington State.
Stranger: Oh, gotcha. Seattle?
Me: [Considering whether to explain there are other cities in Washington besides Seattle. Like the capital, Olympia. Or the whole eastern side of the state.] Sure.

Pike's Place was next.

Pike’s Place was next.

Or this:

Family member introducing me to friends: This is my daughter/sister/niece. She lives in Seattle.
Me: Actually I live an hour south of Seattle, closer to Tacoma really.
Family member: [smiles to friend] We love Seattle.
Random Friend: Does it rain all the time in Seattle?
Me: I don’t live in Seattle, and no, it doesn’t rain all the time.
Family member and Friend: Nod knowingly.

Finally:

Me (out of town) introducing myself to strangers: Hi, I’m Kathy. I’m from [pause, pause] Seattle.
Friends: How nice.

Since this also happens to Rachel and Joshua all the time at school in Tennessee (really, it’s just easier to say we’re from Seattle), Rachel was determined to make sure we went to Seattle at least once during her summer home. As our days together are rapidly (SOB!!) coming to an end, we picked today to go.

I love these three so much!

I love these three so much!

It was a GORGEOUS day! All sunshine and blue skies with lots of warmth thrown into the mix. The streets were crowded with people, and we had a real challenge finding parking (circling the same three block four times is normal, right?). After three failed attempts (one spot too small to get out of the van, another lot turned out to be only free on weekends, and one parking garage took us all the way to the fourth level with NO empty spaces), we ended up on a quiet side street with two hour parking for only $7.

Off we went to complete some Must-Do Seattle activities from Rachel’s list. Last summer David and I went to Seattle with some out of town friends. That time we bought city passes (which I highly recommend) and had an incredible time exploring some of the best attractions in Seattle.

Today was the budget version – we paid for parking, a Mexican plate lunch, and coffee.

We went to Pike’s Place and walked through the market.
We found the Starbucks flagship store.
We went to the famous gum wall in Post Alley and added our gum to the collection.

There was a tour group of 2nd graders heading to the gum wall when we left. Um, okay. LOL.

We tried the coffee at the Storyville Coffee shop (yum).

Delicious coffee!

We drove over to Alki Beach, took off our shoes, burned our feet on the hot sand and dipped our toes in the cold water.
We got some Starbucks for the ride home.

Sarah, Rachel and David are the BEST traveling team - they are thankful, generous, and up for any and all adventures.

We missed having Tim, Daniel and Joshua with us, but we had a great time being Seattle Adventurers. Rachel kept saying, “We’re not tourists because we LIVE in Seattle.” At least now we’re ready to take friends to Seattle and give them an official tour.

Beach time.

Another Dave & Rach Adventure – (Previously Titled, Kayak Day)

Today David and I decided to go on an adventure.

As best friends, David and I try to spend as much time together as we can. Or at least when both our schedules allow. (As a former yogurteer/barista and landscaper, we are in high demand.) It was a beautiful day, so David and I thought we should do something outside. After deliberation and consideration, we borrowed a friend’s kayaks and headed for the ocean.

We had a blast accidentally ramming each other, racing, admiring Washington’s beauty, and talking about life.

Many thanks to Shari who not only loaned us her kayaks and her car, but also taught and helped us to correctly load them so we wouldn’t crash. Thanks Shari! You’re the best. :)

Garage Declutter

Oh my word!! What in the world has happened to my garage? How did it become the dumping ground for every bit of odds and ends in the whole house? And how have I possibly let it go this long?

This can NOT really be my garage!

This can NOT really be my garage!

Heh heh. Well, life is busy and full and so is the garage. I can’t believe I am willing to reveal these bit of hoarding horror on the blog. Not sure it’s really hoarding if it’s just our plain messy lives. Lazy, messy lives as we’ve obviously been ignoring the garage since Christmas. Yep, I don’t think any of the Christmas bins were put away, and two of them were opened and still unpacked. Ha.

Today it was warm and sunny and we didn’t have any evening meetings. It was the perfect time to start tackling the garage mess.

All those beloved stuffed animals!

All those beloved stuffed animals!

David and Sarah helped as best they could. David moved boxes and bins. Sarah took one of the extra twin mattresses out of the garage and up into her room. She also stacked wooden boards for me. We all loaded the van up with giveaway things.

But really, there wasn’t very much they could do. It was a Mama Job. And I made great progress. The kids have their annual testing on Monday and Tuesday. I’m selling a table full of curriculum on one of the days, so I hope to clear out more of the garage then.

This one had to be kept.

This one had to be kept.

One of my favorite things about the summer is having time to purge, declutter and organize the house again. Our schedules are looser, our days freer, and the weather perfect for clearing out cabinet, shelves, drawers and closets. Off you go, mess!

Hope this garage gets in shape quickly.

Rachel’s Return, Learning to Drive & a Homeschool Dance

Rachel is home!!! We’ve been anticipating her return for weeks. Our texts have mostly consisted of, “See you soon!” and “Only one more paper/final before you come home!” And a few, “Don’t Panic, the semester is almost over!” Or even, “Yikes, almost a sophomore!!”

We spent most of Friday getting things ready for Rachel’s return – moving David out of Rachel’s room, cleaning out dressers, going through old clothes, taking apart the bunk bed, and cleaning the house. At some point during the day, Tim got a cell phone update on Rachel’s flight, saying the flight wasn’t due until 10 pm. We had expected her at 9 pm, so this was quite a delay. Still, we didn’t think much of it as it seems airlines are free to change itineraries without permission these days. We had a lovely dinner with our nephew Timothy, his wife Sunny, and baby John. Around 8:30 pm I decided to input Rachel’s flight in my phone flight tracker. At that point the info said her flight was coming in 8 minutes early and would be there at 8:37.

WHAT??!! I hurried to check it again, tried to find the notification that said she wasn’t due until 10 pm, and had a moment of panic. Just as we were rushing to grab shoes, say a hasty goodbye to Tim and Sunny, I got a text from Rachel saying she had landed.

UH OH! We’re a good 45 minutes (when there’s NO TRAFFIC) from the airport. Time to hustle!! David and Sarah jumped into the car with me while Tim stayed home to finish putting together the bed we had bought that afternoon to put in Rachel room. Poor Rachel had to wait for us – no glory for the returning college student!

Now, I should say, to our credit Tim managed to secure Rachel a first class seat on her flight from Dallas to Seattle. Hee hee! Surprise!! Yay for frequent flier miles!! So, although she FELT like we had forgotten her, we were just given wrong info. LOL. And, her dad spoiled her with a surprise First Class seat for the long flight home. A warm cloth to wash hands, a lovely meal, ice cream served in a glass bowl, and room to stretch out. Luxuries these days!

Many hugs and kisses and excited greetings!!

Saturday was our first full day together. Rachel’s friend Jenny came over for a visit. Daniel took the girls driving – time for Rachel to start learning how to drive a stick shift.

Later that evening the three younger kids went off to the Homeschool dance. Rachel stayed home and worked with Tim. They planted tomato plants and some lettuce for me, and even surprised me with three window boxes full of flowers. They had a lovely time while the rest of us kicked up our heels and did a little swing dancing.

So beautiful!

Looking sharp!

Okay, the kids danced, I worked behind the scenes in the kitchen and helped with the cleaning.

By the end of the evening, Daniel was done swing dancing and decided to pull out a board game. Gotta love a resourceful kid who knows how to make the most of a good party.

I think they ended up with a full table of people playing DC Comics, including the wonderful caterer, Duncan Cross. None of them seemed to mind that they had to use a phone as a light for the table while the room was dim for the dance crowd.

It was a great party!
So glad to have Rachel home!

Here’s to the beginning of a great summer!

I’m Glad That’s Over!

Well, David and I finished the Passport 2 Purity material, and managed to have a great time together.

Several times in the course of the more difficult sessions, Dennis Rainey pauses and tells the father and son: “OK. Pause the CD and look at your Dad, and say, “I’m glad that’s over!”

David Triumphant

David Triumphant

It was a light-hearted way to break the serious mood, giving us permission to laugh and to take a break from the intensity of subjects which (for many families) are pretty hard to talk about.

We camped near Ocean Shores, within about a quarter mile of the Pacific. We had lovely weather, but it was much cooler on the coast (and in the wind) than it was here at home. Neither of us are particularly experienced campers, but we managed to pitch our tent and build a fire with hardly any serious injuries.

I really enjoyed the updated Passport 2 Purity material. It is frank, engaging, and steeped in a Christian worldview, which I deeply appreciate. I strongly recommend the five sessions (and the weekend getaway that frames it) to any parent of an 11-14 year old child.

Some of the topics were hard to address, but I think we were both glad to get them out ‘on the table’ and to open a dialog that I hope will continue for years to come.

Some of the projects didn't quite work out as intended, but we persevered.

Some of the projects didn’t quite work out as intended, but we persevered.

We waited too long to do this with David, and yet we are also glad that we have done such a good job of protecting his innocence and purity until now — in some sense it is very sobering (and a little scary) to usher him into a knowledge of sexuality that cannot be rolled back.

We spent a lot of time driving around, since it was easier to listen to the sessions when sitting ‘shoulder to shoulder’ rather than facing each other across a CD player. I never seem to tire of driving on the beach — there is something inherently fun about speeding along at 25 mph on the hard sand.

Why yes, this IS my car.

I was so focused on getting the Passport 2 Purity sessions ‘done’ that I was surprised at how fun it was for me to hang out with David for the weekend. He is really excellent company, and we have a lot in common — we laugh at the same silly things, and we think in some of the same ways. We both really relished the experience of camping and the Go Kart racing that we enjoyed on Saturday afternoon. We both like sitting around a campfire and making stuff burn, and playing frisbee in the dark. We are both in awe of the Pacific, while a little afraid of it. Neither of us is very skilled at flying kites.

David had Charlie Brown's kite, but we managed to get it in the sky, nevertheless.

As I look back at the weekend, I’m so glad that I made the time to do this with my youngest son. It was an experience I expect to remember as one of the highlights of my life.

I think David and I really bonded over the weekend.

I think David and I really bonded over the weekend.

At the conclusion of the fifth session, your son or daughter is presented with an opportunity to ‘Make Up Your Mind’ about how they will think about dating and their sexuality for the next several years. I’m excited to see how God will strengthen David and give him the power he will need to keep himself pure until he can offer that purity to his wife, on their wedding day.

We celebrated by eating fish 'n chips and deep-fried clam strips.

Thank you, David, for sharing this weekend with me, and for keeping your heart open to my teaching and my love.
